Not good news. Hospitalised again.

Postby Barryoneoff » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:26 am

I had no choice but to call an ambulance this morning. Watched her deteriorate more quickly over the last couple of months, but after trying for 1½ hours to get her on her feet after washing and dressing her this morning I had to phone the hospice team for help. They advised me to dial 999. :( As soon as the paramedics saw her they said she had to go in and had the equipment to get her up.
Been up there all day. Was going for a brain scan when we were asked to leave tonight, and a spinal CT scan tomorrow. Can only hope now. :(

Transferred her to Barts tonight. Still on 8 hour drips to get the calcium out of her blood, but lump has grown again and hitting spine. That's why legs went on Sunday. Giving her blood later and arranging more radiotherapy for future. :( Will know more when consultant comes round.

Although I have the greatest respect for Barts (was glad when we had to move from the London, filthy hole), I had to have words with the sister almost as soon as we got there! :shok:
This is how accidents happen, maybe bad handwriting!
Her and the 'witness' nurse brought up the liquid morphine (the tablets are taken at set times but the liquid is requested for any breakthrough pain) and I stopped her giving it because as soon as I looked at the syringe I knew it was wrong! :o I apologised for arguing, but assured her that it was the wrong concentration, a quarter strength. She argued with me but I refused to budge (I have been administering Vick's drugs for fifteen months now and know the dosage of every drug). She pointed out the sheet to me and showed crossings out and additions, and went to phone the doctor, came back with the dosage I had told her, after obviously being told that she was wrong, and never said a *beep* word! :-x No apology whatsoever.

Fair enough, she was giving a quarter of the strength, but what if she were giving ten times the strength (as happened recently somewhere else when the patient died)?

good job you were on the ball barry ,when i left the nhs 3 years ago , it was illegal for controled drugs prescriptions to be crossed out and altered , it had to be written out and signed by the doctor every time .but if you waited for a doctor everytime , the poor patient would have to wait even longer.im glad she is back in barts , try and have a rest not easy i know.

I have heard a lot of good things about Barts, I wish Mrs Barry didn't have to be in hospital at all, but she is in one of the best ones. I hope she feels more comfortable now. Thinking of you both and your girls.

So glad you were there overseeing. it is very important. I think we all need a patient advocate to double check things and look out for any possible errors. .

I always get copies of my blood tests and check them myself.

www.labtestsonline.org is a great tool to get explanations of blood tests
