No More Putting Judy Through the Mangle

For generations he has been a raucous presence at the British seaside.

But in our more sensitive and politically-correct times Mr Punch has sometimes found that his no-holds-barred performance is not to everyone's taste.

Now officials at a coastal resort have deemed a traditional Punch and Judy show too shocking for modern tastes, and ordered any violence to be removed from the script.

What absolute cobblers. You can watch all the violence you like on the TV or movies, but a puppet show is too violent??? :?

When I've seen children laughing at Punch and Judy, I've never ever thought "Oh, the violence, the children will be subverted". I think it's probably a healthy way of keeping those sorts of things at bay - for most people, although I suppose if your homelife was just like a Punch and Judy show, you might think it was normal! But - again, it's political correctness expressed by jumped-up little Stalins employed by Councils.

I thought it was boring much prefered Muffin the Mule, and Andy, Teddy and Looby Lou.

It is true what Barry said, so much violence around in this world which the media report in depth, what child wouldn't know about it, and in Punch and Judy the police comes and gets Punch so there is punishment.

As I remember it, it's the hangman who gets "strung up" by Punch in the end after Mr. Punch pretends he doesn't know how to put his head into the noose and asks the hangman to demonstrate how to do it. Of course...the silly bugger shows Mr. Punch how to do it.
Another part of the Punch and Judy show I remember when I was a kid on holiday in Weymouth was when the crocodile used to creep up behind Mr. Punch and all the kids would yell out trying to warn Mr. Punch of the crocodile that was behind him. When Mr. Punch would turn around, the crocodile would stay behind Mr. Punch's back which would frustrate the yelling kids to no end. According to my mum, since I was too young at the time to pronounce the word "Crocodile", I would yell out "It's a Cockydile!!"

I can't help thinking that today's kids must have a very bland childhood compared to what we had. They seem to be all-knowing and grown up by the time they're 10 years old. What a shame.

That's thanks to the telly and the parents that use it as a child-minder, I'm sure.
