Pie and Mash is New York Bound

Postby ladyDeWint » Tue Jul 06, 2010 5:40 pm

Jim Thurston, the Pieman, is set to conquer American tastebuds.

Americans are about to get a taste of East London's famed pie, mash and liquor.

Eelhouse, a company based in Essex, is currently in talks with American food company Seven Nations on opening a branch in New York City.

"We hope to take a traditional pie'n'mash shop in East London and drop it into New York City," said Jim Thurston, also known as 'The Pieman'.

"It makes sense to bring it to them and not just keep it in London."

The company currently delivers pie, mash and liquor throughout the UK, but hopes to bring the deliverable delicacies to the States. A party pack of 12 pies, 12 mash and 12 liquor costs £96.

"Seven Nations already has a kitchen, so once we can get that up and running around New York then we can try to start delivering to other places like Miami," Jim said. "But America is a really big place. So far we've heard from people in Las Vegas and Miami who want pie, mash and liquor."

There are already several British fish and chip shops and English tearooms throughout New York, but Eelhouse wants to introduce the East End dish into pubs and cafes throughout the Big Apple.

"No one there knows what a pie, mash and liquor is," Jim said. "We're re-birthing a product. Americans like pies already, so we're at least halfway there.

Hopefully within my lifetime, the idea will work its way west to the Southern California area. The thing is...I've never had Pie Mash via my letter box, only in a pie mash shop fresh out of the oven. Does pie mash via mail really taste the same as when you're sitting at a table in the pie mash shop?

Didian said it was good AW.

I always preferred to eat it in the shop than to take it home - never seemed quite the same at home

Growing up in North London, I loved my jellied eels, whelks, cockles and so forth. Funny, but I never had pie and mash, or even saw a store on the high street. Was this strictly an East End thing?

I think it was mainly east london but there must have been some in north london because Chas and Dave were north londoners and they liked it enough to put it into a song.

There's a pie mash shop in Chapel Street Market, Islington, Meryl. Been there for many years. There's also one in Hornsey Road and another down in Seven Sisters Road. :-)

:-D I've never heard that song before, Lady.
It sounds like a day in the life of Aldgate West prior to 1962. :-D

The "pie-and-mash" remains a bit of a mystery to me! We used to enjoy a meat pie (beef) of one type or another and had plenty of mash. But I'm ignorant about the "liquor". Is that a gravy? - thin gravy perhaps?
I tried eel once but couldn't take to it - so I've let the jellied eels pass me by although I remember seeing "Tubby Isaacs' Jellied Eels" on sale in London.
I looked at that website for pie and mash some time back. I thought the prices on it - and as quoted on ELF the other day fairly steep. Certainly food in Australia is remarkably cheap compared with Britain - and steak of every imaginable sort abounds (and anywhere between $10 and $25 a kilogram, ie approx 10GBP to 25GBP per pound in weight.
Except that ... some idiot in Queensland has just poisoned something like 7 million tomatoes as an act of sabotage which will skyrocket prices for tomatoes later in the year (he poisoned the irrigation water - he should hang for that! -or at least get a good dressing down from a marxist-friendly magistrate).

The nearest description is that it's a type of parsley sauce.

As for that complete idiot it beggars belief, tampering with any water supply should be a capitol offence.

It shows how vulnerable we can be. Usually there's open access to irrigation channels where they pass people's farms. When you think of acts of terrorism, it's probably fairly easy for someone with bad intentions to poison a water supply (or did I watch too many episodes of "Spooks"?)

The poisoned crops were seedlings that wouldn't have been harvested until September. The supermarkets always jumps straight on the bandwagon and put up their prices :(

John pie and mash liquor doesn't look very nice to someone who's not grown up with it but slap on a bit of vinegar and it's just beautiful
