When i worked in England i had a number of jobs including steeplejack, blacksmiths striker, roofing worker [tiles, slate and bitumen] and building maintenance, i was lowered on a bosun's chair down the side of gasometers, walked on scaffold boards suspended from cables inside Greenwich gasworks and stood on the edge of three storey buildings pulling bags of cement up by rope.
Health and safety wasn't even heard of then, now I'm all for it after the many accidents I've seen over the years.
one thing i should mention that while i was pulling the cement up, the rope went slack and i fell back onto the roof, i thought that if it came loose it could kill the bloke at the bottom i jumped up, looked over the edge and there was old Vinnie looking up at me covered from head to toe in cement, the rope had cut the bag in half. it took me two weeks to stop laughing every time i saw him.
