I know that Newley's voice was an acquired taste but I liked it because he was the only pop star to sing in his native cockney accent. People never seem to think that romantic songs can be sung in such a manner. Most singers think that they have to adopt an american accent to be acceptable, when you look at the Eurovision Song Contest, participants from every country from Ireland to Turkey are singing in a manner more befitting the southern States of the USA. David Bowie admits that he was influenced by Newley.
His song called 'Why' - is my all time favourite - I play it alot on YouTube. Reading about Bowie - I used to work for his father - in the late 60s - a Mr. Jones. Bowie had to change his name, as there was already a Davey Jones in the Monkeys.
