Old Hackney photos

There is (or was) so much history in the East End of London. From lost or preserved buildings, to immigrants and events. We'll give this new section a try for a while.

Old Hackney photos

Postby Terry » Mon Apr 05, 2010 2:03 pm

There are some interesting old photos of Hackney on this site, including a few ' Now and then' shots.
There's one of the Nags Head in Hackney Rd. on page 2 and I could be wrong but I seem to recall
the blind singer Lenny Peters singing in there.

Some great old pics there, especially the ones of Mare Street and the ABC Ritz cinema near Clapton Pond.
The one that really interested me was of the Victoria pub in Wick road, it was my local in the 60's and 70's
and I spent many a happy hour or two there and I spent a few quid as well.
Tezza, you could be right about Lenny Peters, he was a pub singer before he had a few hit records and got
on the TV.
Cheers all, Bottoms up

I don't know, but I think Georgie Fame used to appear at the Green Gate quite regularly before he got famous. He is still a good jazz singer today.

I think Lenny Peters sang in a few pubs. Tabby - I never knew Georgie Fame sang at the Green Gate - I first saw him at the Maruee in Wardour Street. I still like him too.

Good photos Terry - I was born in Hackney

Grumpy, I think your right about the Green Gate.
I didn't know Georgie Fame sang in pubs but I'm not surprised, I think he liked a drink.
Yeah Yeah, and that's what I say Yeah Yeah :whis:

I saw Rod Stewart there before he made it bigtime. I'll put a tiger in your tank was one of his songs. :-)

Saw lots of people there before they got big - Tiger in Your Tank reminds me of The Downliners Sect who mostly played at Ken Colyer's in Gt Newport Street (Studio 51) - they were the days :-)
